A Guide To Securing Your Safe When You Live In a Rental
The best way to secure a safe is to bolt it to something sturdy, such as the floor. But when you rent your home, that's not always an option. Read our tips below on how to keep your home safe secure while keeping your landlord happy too. If you have questions about protecting your valuables, stop by The Safe Company in Garland, TX, to check out our inventory of gun, home, and business safes.
Bolting to the Wall
It's usually easier to repair a wall that's been drilled into rather than the floor, but we recommend asking your landlord before you do. The best place to bolt a wall safe is in a corner so that the safe can be set against two walls for extra support and protection. If you aren't experienced with using a drill, we recommend hiring a professional to install your safe.
Steel Slab
If you can't use a wall, a steel slab is your next best option. The slab needs to be wider than the door frame of the room you will keep your safe in and at least a quarter of an inch thick. Once you have found an ideal spot for your slab, place the safe on top and bolt it into the slab. A burglar will need to break the slab in order to get the safe out, which is less likely to happen because of the time it would take.
If using a steel slab isn't a viable option, you can also use a wood pallet. Keep in mind that although a wood pallet may deter a burglar in a rush, they are much easier to break.
